Description

The course is in four parts.

Part 1: Protocol and architectural issues, which enable the Internet to handle traffic generated by multimedia applications (voice, video, data). The focus is on IntServ, DiffServ, MPLS, VPN, and on scheduling algorithms that can guarantee Quality of Service (QoS) on the Internet.

Part 2: Issues related to a wireless multihop environment and how they are reflected in the design of mesh network systems and long term evolution systems. The most common interference models, channel assignment algorithms, routing protocols and resource allocation scheduling algorithms will be thoroughly analyzed. Available solutions for energy harvesting, energy conservation, and energy efficiency are also presented.

Part 3: Internet of Things: the main application scenarios are discussed, and the state-of-art architectures and network paradigms are introduced, as well as the most relevant available solutions at the access and network layers.

Part 4: The Internet as a complex network. Two main aspects are addressed: measurement systems and modeling the Internet temporal evolution. The first aspect covers various kinds of Internet measurements, the challenges in measuring the Internet, the methods and tools that have been developed to carry out such measurements, and the results that have been obtained. The second aspect reviews the class of scale-free network models (Barabasi-Albert Models), which until a few years ago were used to model the temporal evolution of the Internet.

The Lab project consists in the design and implementation of algorithms covering topics developed during the course.

Organization of lessons

Theoretical lessons will alternate with tests, but the order will not be established beforehand. Tests will generally take place at the end of the theoretical part. Lessons will start punctually and there will be a 15 minute break between the first and second hours. The lecturer/professor holding the course will be available during the break between the two hours, and on Thursday mornings from 11.30 to 13.30 in his room at the department (Dipartimento di Ingegneria dell'Informazione: Elettronica, Informatica e Telecomunicazioni - Sezione Informatica, via Diotisalvi, 2).

Organization of exams

The exam consists in the development of a project, which normally concerns assessing the performance of a protocol. There is then an oral exam.
